PIPL
What is PIPL?
The PIPL, or Personal Information Protection Law, is the Chinese government's national data protection law governing the collection and use of personal data by organizations and individuals. The PIPL, which went into effect Nov 1 2021, institutes stricter measures around personal data and includes provisions governing the collection of personal information, such as location, health, finance and biometric data. The scope of PIPL extends to foreign companies handling the personal data of “natural persons” in China – even if the individuals are foreign nationals and even if the data processing takes place outside of China.
